Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD) and Atherosclerosis

People over 50 - and sometimes younger people - are potentially affected by arteries that are narrowing by slowly building up advanced atherosclerosis that can cause diseases in different organs. For example, advanced atherosclerosis of the coronary arteries (arteries that supply heart muscles) can lead to angina and heart attacks while similarly affected cerebral arteries (arteries that supply blood to the brain) can lead to strokes. Advanced atherosclerosis in the lower extremities can lead to pain while walking, difficult wound healing or leg ulcers. Often PAD builds up without any early signs.
